Breeding Aims

Glenlea Park aims to breed sheep that return the most profit to growers.  We believe these sheep to be plain bodied (no wrinkle), long stapled and with a deep lustrous crimp.  Early maturing is another important trait we aim for, so growers can get their wether lambs to kill weights and ewe lambs to joining weights early.  Large framed sheep are important but equally so is a strong constitution, being able to not only survive harsh conditions but actually produce meat and fibre in these environments.

As ram producers it is a breeding aim at Glenlea Park to produce rams that perform predictably.  Rams that look good but don't reproduce to an expected standard are those that don't have a good genetic history.  We performance record all of our ewes every year with records of wool weights, microns, SDs and number of lambs reared.  Rams that have generations of good genetics combined with good performance are not as likely to disappoint with their progeny.

A lot of ram breeders believe it is a numbers game (i.e if you mate enough ewes you will eventually breed a good ram).  While this is true, it explains why rams from these breeders do not breed well.

At Glenlea Park we believe it is more important to only breed from top quality genetics, preferring a smaller quality flock over a larger flock of mixed quality.  Therefore clients can be assured that the ram they purchased has come from a top ewe and is more likely to reproduce good genetics.  We have found this also results in a more even line of rams for clients to select.
